Fibromyalgia and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a disorder effects around 2–4% of people, with 9-to-1 female-to-male ratio. FMS is the second most common disorder, after osteoarthritis, according to rheumatologists [1]. The symptoms of FMS include chronic pain all over, intense pain in response to pressure (allodynia), long muscle spasms, weakness in the arms and legs, nerve pain, muscle twitching, tenderness, tiredness, sleeplessness and multiple mental effects. These effects include problems with short- and long- term memory, decreased speed of mental processing, lower attention span and lower multi-tasking ability. FMS has a devastating effect on people's lives, including difficulty doing everyday activities, decreased ability to do outside work and difficulties maintaining normal relationships with family, friends and employers [2]. This can cause anxiety and depression in many FMS patients.

This study provides evidence that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can improve the symptoms and life quality of fibromyalgia (FMS) patients. It also shows that HBOT can correct abnormal brain activity in painful areas of fibromyalgia patients.

Other symptoms include tiredness to a degree that normal activities are affected, sleep problems, and troubles with memory. Some people with Fibromyalgia also have restless legs syndrome, bowel or bladder problems, numbness and tingling, and sensitivity to noise, lights or temperature. Many with Fibromyalgia have depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Other types of chronic pain are common too. 

The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. It is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The condition runs in families and many genes are believed to be involved. Environmental factors may include psychological stress, trauma, and certain infections. The pain appears to result from the central nervous system working and the condition is referred to as a "central sensitization syndrome". Fibromyalgia is recognized as a disorder by the US National Institutes of Health and the American College of Rheumatology. There is no specific diagnostic test. Diagnosis involves first ruling out other potential causes and verifying that a set number of symptoms are there.

The treatment of fibromyalgia can be difficult. Recommendations often include getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet. These may improve the symptoms slightly but usually do not have a big effect on the condition. 

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can treat fibromyalgia by improving the symptoms and quality of life for FMS patients. It can help the ability of the brain to form and reorganize connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury. It can also correct abnormal brain activity in painful areas of FMS patients.

A study in 2015 by Shai Efrati provides evidence that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can treat fibromyalgia patients.
